About

A locksmith whose rate before you commit.

Mobile across Berkeley and the cities along its edges, any hour, with the figure agreed before the technician touches the lock. Here is how a visit runs and what is put in writing.

Campanile Lock & Key service van at dusk

Campanile Lock & Key is a mobile locksmith for Berkeley and the north East Bay, named after Sather Tower, the clock tower on the campus that a good half of the city can see from its own front steps. There is no shop, because locks are not brought to a counter; the van goes to the door, the car or the storefront. It carries what Berkeley doors take: mortise cases, levers and spindles for brown-shingle and Craftsman fronts, warded keys for skeleton-key interior doors, aluminum deadlatches and hookbolts for glass shop doors, strike plates and jamb reinforcement, keypad locks, exit devices, and blanks and programmers for most cars on the road. Calls are answered 24/7, nights, weekends and holidays included.

Pricing is arranged so you can check the arithmetic yourself. Every job carries an $89 service call, and it is counted inside the figure you agree to rather than added at the end. A house lockout runs $109 to $189, a rekey $22 to $37 per cylinder, new hardware $105 to $285 per door, a car key $135 to $375. An 8pm to midnight arrival adds $35 and a midnight to 7am arrival adds $70, both stated inside the total before you say yes. Master key systems and access control are quoted in writing after the doors have been walked, because those depend on how many doors exist and who should open which. Once the figure is agreed, that is the figure on the card.

Coverage runs the full width of the city and a little beyond it. Downtown sees the van in about 12 minutes, Southside and Telegraph 14, North Berkeley 15, Elmwood and West Berkeley 16, Thousand Oaks and Westbrae 18, Claremont 20. The Berkeley Hills are honestly slower, around 26 minutes, because the streets above Grizzly Peak Blvd double back on themselves and many houses sit a stair flight above the road. Across the whole 18 square miles the average is 19 minutes. Albany, Kensington, El Cerrito, Emeryville and the Richmond Annex are served at the same figures, between 17 and 24 minutes, and for any of these the window given on the call is the number worth planning around.

The Agreed-First Price

Four commitments made before a tool comes out of the van, and kept through the receipt.

One figure, agreed on the callYou are told a single number for the job you describe. It covers the visit, the labour and the parts that go into the door. You agree to it before anyone is sent, and it is what the card is charged.
A name and a thirty-minute window by textThe technician's name and a thirty-minute arrival window reach your phone by text before the van sets off, so you know who is coming and roughly when to expect the knock.
Opened without damage, drilled only with your yesThe lock is picked, decoded or bypassed first, and in most cases it keeps working afterwards. If picking fails, the technician explains why, and drilling happens only after you agree to it, at the same figure.
Card at the door, receipt in writingPay by card or tap when the work is finished. An itemized receipt goes to your email, and if a landlord, a property manager or a co-op board needs a written line describing what was done, you get one.
The visit
$89, already inside

The service call is counted within the figure you agree to. It is never a separate line that appears once the door is open.

The labour
All of it

Picking, decoding, cutting, pinning, fitting and adjusting the door until it closes properly. No hourly clock and no charge for a second attempt.

The parts fitted
Named before work starts

Cylinders, deadbolts, latches, pins, strike plates, cut and programmed keys. You are told which parts and what they cost while you are still on the call.

Added later
Nothing

No mileage up the hill, no fee for long stairs or a side gate. Evening and overnight hours are stated inside the figure at the time you agree to it.

24/7 — nights, weekends & holidays

One call, one figure, agreed before the work starts

Calls answered 24/7 across Berkeley and the north East Bay. The $89 service call, the labour and the parts are inside the number you agree to, and nothing is added to it afterwards.
