A master key system lets one key open every door a manager needs, while each tenant, technician or shift lead carries a key that opens only what belongs to them. Design starts with a floor plan or a walk-through and a plain conversation about who needs to go where, and who must not. From that the technician draws the levels: a grand master where a portfolio needs one, a master per building, sub-masters by floor or department, and change keys at each door. A keyway is chosen that a hardware counter cannot duplicate, so one change key does not quietly become three. Cylinders are pinned on the van with master wafers stacked above the change pins, every key is stamped with its level and logged by number, and you receive a key schedule showing which key opens which door. Empty positions are left in the chart so that doors added next year join the same system instead of starting a second one.
Master key work is quoted per project, because door count, keyway choice and restricted-key options are what set the price; a single published figure would be a guess. The written quote lists cylinders by door, keys by level, and the design time once. The $89 visit covers the on-site survey and is counted toward the job. Once you approve the quote it does not move. Repinning one door later stays inside the system at the $22 to $37 per-cylinder figure.

After the walk-through you receive the access chart and the itemized quote in writing. Approve it, and installation is scheduled for a day the building can afford to have its doors open. Keys are handed over logged and signed for, and the receipt itemizes every cylinder.

That is the standard shape for a system. Each researcher carries a change key for their own room and the shared bench, the lab manager holds the master, and the reagent and cold rooms sit on a sub-master limited to people trained for them. When a project ends, only that room's cylinder is repinned.
Can the locks already on our doors be used?+
Usually. Commercial Schlage, Sargent, Yale, Best and similar cylinders accept master pinning without complaint. Cylinders in a keyway that will not join the system, or worn to the point where an extra pin stack would stick, are swapped and listed in the quote so the count is visible before work begins.
What happens if the master key is lost?+
Only the doors under that master are repinned, not the whole building. That is the practical argument for building a system in levels rather than hanging one master over everything. With a restricted keyway, an unauthorized copy is unlikely to have been cut in the first place.
